@Tripadvisor’s Cambridgeshire top 30 is a helpful place to start looking for a meal.

It isn’t a guarantee that every highly listed restaurant will be worth your money.

That’s the difference between finding a popular restaurant and finding the right restaurant for a Tuesday night, a birthday, a family meal or a big spend.

Tripadvisor says its ranking uses page views, reviews, restaurant attributes and other aggregated data but they don't say what that is.

That tells you what has attracted attention on the site.

It doesn’t tell you if the restaurant suits your budget, dietary needs, travel time or idea of a good evening.

So treat the list as a shortlist, not a set of instructions.

Take Namaste Village in Cambridge. 

Its current menu gives vegetarian and vegan diners a clear choice, with allergen information available and ordering details set out online.

The restaurant also offers breakfast and afternoon tea, with advance booking needed for the latter.

That makes it a different proposition from a restaurant chosen simply because it has a high review position.

For a meal where the occasion is the point, Restaurant Twenty Two on Chesterton Road is a very different bet but the prices reflect that also. 

The restaurant asks diners to book and says it can accommodate dietary requirements.

Recent Tripadvisor reviews include praise for the food, service and atmosphere, but also differing views on the length of the tasting menu and its value.

That isn’t a reason to dismiss it. It is a reason to know what sort of evening you’re booking.

Then there’s Rudy’s Pizza Napoletana in Cambridge, which gives the ranking a more casual comparison.

 Its current branch menu makes it easier to think about a relaxed meal rather than assuming every top-listed restaurant is a special-occasion destination.

The final bill is where any rankings become a bit slippery.

 A review score cannot tell you how hungry your group will be, how much you’ll spend on drinks or extras, or if a tasting-menu experience is what you wanted in the first place.

 A restaurant can be excellent even have 4-5 stars and still be the wrong choice for your night.

Check the live listing and the restaurant’s own menu and booking page before setting off.
